About Moso Bamboo

Moso, the largest of all bamboo species, is the main bamboo in China and plays a very important role for the ecological environment. Moso is distinguished by relatively short lower internodes in the strongly tapered, furry culms and has unusually small leaves.

Moso grows best in warm and moist climates. Hardy to 10 F, zone 10 in the USA, moso can tower up to 90 feet and the diameter of the canes can go up to 8 inches. There are clones of moso in zone 7 and 8 with the lowest winter temperature of 0 F, that grows slower and smaller in size, but still makes a good screening for gardens.

native to China, moso has a great economical value: furniture, flooring, ornamental, food, plywood, etc.

moso starts to grow rapidly from the sixth year after planting, about 6 inches in height everyday. Then what happens during the first 5 years? It develops its root system to about 10 yards in diameter and 5 yards in depth, which makes the neighbourhood plants unable to grow, leaving all the nutrients and space to moso alone.
